Make Believe

Shock of Being CD/LP

Flameshovel Records | Polyvinyl Records September 13, 2005

Shock of Being was recorded by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio studio B

The debut full-length from Cap'n Jazz/Joan of Arc frontman Tim Kinsella's Make Believe has significantly more swing than the cathartic punch of their self-titled EP. It's a remarkable leap forward, given that both releases came out the same year. And the jump from "throw it at the wall and see what sticks" to the sophisticated confluence of angular instrumentation and reinvigorated rhythm resembles the artistic evolution of the similarly principled indie band Battles . But SHOCK OF BEING operates with a great deal more minimalism, which cleverly hides a wealth of talent behind the consciously DIY amateurishness.
